Grab (formerly known as MyTeksi), Southeast Asia’s leading ride hailing app is introducing the GrabCar’s services to two other major tourist hotspots, Malacca and Kota Kinabalu.
“Grab is already present in these cities when we introduced our MyTeksi service, therefore GrabCar is meant to complement current taxi service by offering an alternative transportation option that is convenient and affordable in these highly populated tourist locations where transport, traffic and parking are often an issue,” said Jaygan Fu, Country Head of Grab Malaysia.
Fu went on to add that Malacca and Kota Kinabalu attracted a significant number of both local and international tourists and visitors yearly. Malacca is a UNESCO certified World Heritage City, known for its traditional and cultural value, whereas Kota Kinabalu is home to some of nature’s best beaches and waterfronts in East Malaysia. Coupled with the economic opportunities in both these locations, therefore, Grab identified this as an opportunity to cater its private hire vehicles to those who were already used to the idea of ride hailing services.
He also went on to share GrabCar not only leverages on the same safety aspects as MyTeksi but with added features. “Both GrabCar and MyTeksi drivers are required to go through stringent background checks, have access to 24-7 customer service and PDRM button in the driver’s app in the event of emergency, passengers can share their ride with their friends and family so they can keep track of their whereabouts and also both drivers and passengers are covered by an insurance policy,” elaborated Fu.
In addition to this, other distinct features significant to GrabCar are that it operates based on a fixed-fare and passengers can choose to pay either via cash or credit/debit card. “This means regardless of traffic conditions, passengers will know their fares up-front and have the convenience and flexibility of a dual payment option,” said Fu.
GrabCar’s launch in Malacca and Kota Kinabalu will not only be a likeable transport option for tourist and cost conscious passengers, but it will also be a viable source of income for those who want to be a GrabCar driver in these areas.
“Grab with its array of transport options has a social mission to not only provide safe, reliable and affordable transportation options, but is now fast becoming a source of income for many who prefer the comfort, convenience and flexibility of not being in a desk-bound job but yet still able to earn a decent income,” Fu further added.
Since the introduction of GrabCar in Klang Valley in 2014, GrabCar, has expanded its operations to Johor Bahru, Penang and now Malacca and Kota Kinabalu.
