The 60 year old retired saleman had bailed out his 28 year old son twice from loan sharks due to the son’s gambling habits but then son asked again for his father’s help to him clear his RM110,000 debts recently and the father gave him hell money instead.
The father spoke to The Star saying that he has been harassed, publicly shamed and had his house vandalised by loan sharks one too many times, wanted to send a clear message to his son: “You are dead to me”.
“For eight years I did my duty as a parent. Any parent has to help his son. But after eight years you have to cut off. I want to tell the Ah Long, don’t disturb us anymore. I am sick and I have to take care of myself. Don’t disturb us anymore,” he told The Star.
Lee’s son Ken, first came to his father with a RM150,000 debt in 2009 after he failed to pay 6 loan sharks. Ken borrowed money from loan sharks for online gambling.
Ken’s father sent him off to Australia to pursue a degree which the father hoped would give him a better future but Ken came back after graduation and borrowed another RM40,000 in 2013, saying it was for business and was begging his father to settle it again.
Loan sharks threw red paint at Lee’s home in Subang. Flyers of his son have been distributed to neighbours and repossessors would camp outside his home.
Ken fled from home and let the family bear the harassment.
You would have thought that Ken might have learnt his lesson after all those but the same thing happened again in August when loan sharks threw paint at Lee’s house and a RM110,000 debt notice from loan sharks.
“I don’t have anymore money. I only have hell bank notes. If the Ah Long still want to lend money to my son and then try and get it from me, I don’t have anymore,” Lee told reporters at a press conference in the MCA Public Services and Complaints department.
The 28 year old son begged his father again for money but this time Lee gave his son hell money.
“I’ve been doing this for 30 years and even I was shocked,” said Chong. “I asked him why do you keep doing this to your family. Ken said, ‘I can only become rich when I gamble. Hopefully one day I can win and pay back all the money’. But look at what he has done,” he said.
